Summerlands

Summerlands provides care for up to nine individuals with learning disabilities and/or autistic spectrum disorder, some of whom may experience challenging behaviours. This recent CQC inspection report details findings from a visit on January 10, 2018, assessing the service across key areas. Medicines are managed safely and accurately, with clear guidance for "as and when required" medications. Incidents and accidents are analysed for learning, and environmental risks are well-mitigated, ensuring a secure living environment.

The effectiveness of care at Summerlands is demonstrated by its alignment with best practices and legislation, particularly regarding the Mental Capacity Act. Staff are encouraged to support residents in making as many decisions as possible, and when capacity is limited, decisions are made in their best interests. Residents have choice and control over their daily lives, including meals and activities. Staff receive comprehensive training and ongoing support, ensuring they have the skills to meet residents' diverse needs. Health needs are well-managed through regular communication with healthcare professionals, and adaptations to the premises are made to enhance independence.

Regarding caring practices, the staff at Summerlands are noted for knowing residents well and treating them with kindness and compassion. They utilise a range of communication tools to ensure residents can express themselves, and privacy and dignity are consistently promoted. Residents are encouraged to develop independent living skills, and staff foster positive relationships among residents and with visitors. The support provided is tailored to each person's specific needs and preferences, ensuring a nurturing environment.

The service's responsiveness is evident in its person-centred care plans, which provide clear guidance for staff and are developed with resident involvement. Residents are encouraged to voice concerns through various channels, and these are addressed appropriately. The service also actively supports residents in thinking about and planning for end-of-life care, ensuring their wishes are recorded and respected.

The leadership at Summerlands is characterised by a clear vision that is understood and shared by all staff, focusing on individual growth and opportunities. Effective systems are in place to support staff roles and ensure required notifications are submitted.
