Maple View

This report summarises the findings from a recent inspection of Maple View. The inspection focused on safety, effectiveness, and leadership, and identified significant areas for improvement. The overall assessment indicates that current practices do not consistently meet the required standards to ensure the well-being and independence of residents.

Regarding safety, the home has not always protected residents from avoidable harm. There were instances where physical restraint was used without adequate guidance or follow-up in care plans, and staff training for these interventions was out of date. Concerns were also raised about medication practices, particularly the use of "as required" medicines, and how incidents and safeguarding issues were managed and escalated. In terms of how effective the care is, there are concerns about adherence to the Mental Capacity Act, with some legal authorisations for resident supervision having expired. Additionally, not all residents were consistently supported with healthy eating, as evidenced by significant weight gain in one individual due to an unhealthy diet. The responsiveness of the service is also an area needing attention. While residents could receive visitors, care plans did not always reflect current needs, and information from daily records was not consistently used to update these plans. The service also needs to ensure that staff training is consistently up-to-date, particularly in areas such as restraint, moving and handling, and first aid. Concerning how well-led the service is, governance systems were found to be ineffective, failing to identify and address risks related to safety, medication, and resident care. There were also issues with staff relationships and a lack of timely action regarding staff conduct.
